Abstract
Given that an increase in the population of the elderly results in the increase in the cost of health for the elderly, in recent years, increasing attention has been paid to health care for the elderly. This paper investigates the impact of retirement on three dimensions of health, such as health behaviors(smoking, drinking, and physical activity), mental health, and subjective health status. Using the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) for the sample period from 2006 to 2014, we employ a fixed effect model to control for the omitted variable bias. Moreover, to account for reverse causality (the reverse effect of health on retirement), the sample is stratified across individuals who has no major chronic illnesses at the waves of retirement. This study finds that retirement leads to an increase in the probability of having a physical activity at least once per week. On the other hand, the effect of retirement on mental health for retirees is negative. This study also finds that while retirees improves their health behaviors, subjective health is negatively affected by the deterioration in mental health.
